The Unique Qualities of Oak Bark Tanned Leather

We have chosen to make our belts using the best quality, full grain, oak bark tanned leather from J & FJ Baker of Colyton, Devon, our local tannery a few miles away, because of its unique qualities. The long slow tannage ensures that the fibres which make up a hide are allowed to remain in their natural weave, producing hard wearing leather of between 4.5 – 6mm in thickness.

Because the natural grain of oak bark tanned leather is not corrected by removing the surface and applying a uniform finish, the weave or grain gives each individual belt its own unique character. Growth marks, scars, blemishes and flesh veins may be visible on your belt – these are not considered defects but are an indicator of the life of each individual hide and it will continue to mature with daily use.

All hides are finished by hand at the tannery and there will be variations in the shades of colour.
